Justin Muchnick attends Phillips Academy Andover in Massachusetts and is the co-author of Straight-A Study Skills (Adams Media, January, 2013). He is currently the youngest journalist for The Bootleg (www.scout.com), Stanford University's sports news website, where he publishes articles about college football. His academic interests include reading, writing, Latin, and modern American history and politics. He also plays soccer and is on the Varsity Wrestling team at Andover. When he is not at boarding school, he lives in Newport Beach, CA with his parents and three younger siblings (Jacob, Ross, and Ally).

What makes The Boarding School Survival Guide unique is that its author is a current boarding school student. Yes, Justin Ross Muchnick is going into his second year at Phillips Academy Andover in Massachusetts. When he was in 7th grade, Muchnick decided he wanted to go to boarding school, but he didn't know where to start because there was so little information. He wrote this book to give other students and their families the information he wished he’d had when he was looking at, applying to, and choosing a boarding school. He notes, “I realized there’s a real void of information about boarding schools. There’s so much about colleges, but for boarding schools, you really have to scour the Internet and track people down.”

The Boarding School Survival Guide includes 25 chapters that help students choose and navigate life at boarding school, including campus visit advice, how to deal with homesickness, and finding a mentor.

In addition to sharing his own story suggestions, Muchnick reached out to hear from boarding school students throughout the country. Chapter contributors include students at Andover, Exeter, Choate Hotchkiss, Deerfield, Hill, St. Paul’s, Lawrenceville, Thatcher, Cate, Taft, Tilton, Kent, South Kent, Webb, Hebron, Pomfret, Middlesex, THINK Global, Maine School of Science and Mathematics, Culver, and other boarding schools across the United States.

Why did he do this? “No two experiences are exactly the same—people have such a wide array of experiences from going to boarding school,” Muchnick explained. “A diverse collection of opinions or voices really captures the essence and provides great advice for students seeking a boarding school."

Additional information about the author and his new book can be found by visiting The Boarding School Survival Guide page on Facebook.
